Abstract Τhe Greeks took the Phoenician alphabet and adapted it to their needs. Τhey gave to five Phoenician letters the value of the vowels of their language, and added at the end of the alphabet the letters Φ, Χ, Ψ; this addition was not made simultaneously by all the Greeks.
