Studied history, classical philology and economics at Munich, Göttingen and Leipzig. 1875 doctorate in medieval history at Göttingen; 1879 habil. in ancient history at Erlangen. From 1884 prof. of ancient history at Erlangen, from 1901 at Munich. Ennobled 1909 (‘von P.’).
