If we think of Chinese linguistics as the systematic, theoretical discussion of Chinese languages, the beginning of Chinese linguistics in Italy has its roots in the environment of the late-Renaissance Catholic missions in China. Some Westerners were in China before the 16th century and, among them, some Italians where there during the Yuán Dynasty. It seems that they left only very few and scattered notes…
