14th century. Italy. This fragmentary chronicle reports events that occurred between 15 August, 1313 and 22 August, 1320. The handwriting and the simple style seem to suggest that the author was a merchant from Siena. It was written during the first half of the 14th century, and is thus the oldest known chronicle of Siena.

The extant fragments exhibit an ancient page numbering which suggests that the first 52 folios are missing. As a result, it is impossible to know what years the beginning of the original chronicle covered. The manuscript containin…
