Wilhelm Werner was born on the 6th January 1485 in Meßkirch, as the fourth son of the Baron (Freiherr) Johann Werner von Zimmern and Countess Margaretha of Öttingen. Initially he received a secular education at the Württemberg court and elsewhere, but then his family decided to prepare him for a career in the Church.
