Much of our knowledge of women in Indonesia is intertwined with the history of the formation of the modern state, from the grand colonial project that was the Dutch East Indies to the independent state of Indonesia. This history, founded upon the penetration of international capital and the ascendancy of print, has had a profound effect on the discourse on women, and on the intersection of gender and Islam in the archipelago.
