National Insignia, Signs, and Monuments: Sub-Saharan Africa

This entry explores what national symbols might mean to women living in Islamic cultures in Sub-Saharan Africa. Little research has been undertaken on this subject so the focus has to be on setting the scene and asking appropriate questions. To do this, it is first necessary to briefly address the question of African nation-building and the processes of gendering of these nations.
