Our medieval sources contain precious few reports on al-Fārābī’s life, which moreover tend to be rather scant, and at times even contradict each other. Nevertheless these testimonials have acquired a certain significance in the history of the field, since they have been used time and again as a basis for hypotheses about al-Fārābī’s person, his convictions, and his philosophical outlook.
