1. Scope. The term “Breviary” is derived from the book which, since the Middle Ages, “briefly” comprises, for practical use, the texts from various sources (the Psalter, the holy Scriptures, the Hymnal, the Antiphonary, the Lectionary, the Sacramentary), which make up the “canonical hours”; the entire Office soon began to be described as the “Breviary”.
