Plato had already noted that souls could be healed by means of “certain types of dialogue". But it was only in the present century that psychotherapy was developed as a systematic and scientific method of medical treatment, which may be used to cure certain psychic illnesses.

There are three basic procedures which may be distinguished in modern psychotherapy: 1) the suggestive (or supportive) approach, 2) the cathartic approach, and 3) the analytical approach.
