1. Hermeneutical basis for understanding the Church’ s teaching. The true meaning of the doctrine of purgatory can only be understood within the framework of a general account of eschatology. Only the idea of the eschatological as such, as the transcendental condition of all eschatological phenomena, makes it possible to conceive a condition which has its special theological significance precisely “in the end”. This is so both formally, i.e., in regard to the necessity of any statement about it, and materially, i.e., in regard to its meaning and factual character.
