Cyrenaica The coastal strip of North Africa from the Great Syrte at the Philainon Bomoi (Arae Philaenorum) in the west to Catabathmus Megas in the east took its name of Cyrenaica from the Theran colony of Cyrene. Together with Ptolemaïs, Berenice, Arsinoë and Apollonia, this city formed the so-called Libyan Pentapolis.
