Abstract Under the name of iambic poetry have been transmitted to us fragments of iambic trimeters (also choliambic trimeters), trochaic tetrameters, and epodic combinations whose main themes were invective, aischrología, irony, explicit sexuality. Archilochus of Paros (7th c. BCE), Semonides of Amorgos (7th c. BCE), Hipponax of Ephesus (6th c. BCE) and, later on, Ananius (6th c. BCE), Hermippus of Athens (5th c.
