1. IntroductionThe Old Uyghur script is based on the Soghdian alphabet, a simplified version of the Aramaic script, and was introduced at the time of the Uyghur Khaganate (744–840). It was used as the official alphabet in the Mongolian empire from the early 13th c. onwards and later was taken over by the Manchu in the 17th c.
