Explanatory Notes:
This massive work represents the labour of hundreds of lawyers and scholars throughout the world. It is undoubtedly the most extensive and thorough examination of comparative law on the international level ever published. It incorporates not only detailed descriptions of the legal systems of more than 150 countries but, above all, thoroughly documented comparative analyses of the main issues in civil and commercial law and related issues world-wide. Consisting originally of 17 planned volumes in total, each volume was divided into 6-20 chapters written by relevant specialists. Rather than delaying publication until the entire volume was finalized, every chapter was published upon completion in paperback form. Once a year several of these chapters, not necessarily of the same volume, were published in a single instalment. As soon as all the chapters in a given volume were available, they were indexed, updated where necessary and published in a hardback edition.
The user of the online edition will note the absence of certain chapters. This occurs when not all chapters for a particular volume were published in print.
Similarly, volume indexes are available for all content that was published in a hardback volume edition (III, IV, VII, X, XI, XIII, XIV, XV and XVI). These indexes are available on the "Print Volume Indexes" tab on this page.
Footnote numbers
The encyclopedia contains thousands of references to footnotes within the text. For example: supra n. 771 or infra n. 131 (= see note 771 above; see note 131 below) Those references refer to footnote numbers as they appear in the print edition. The online footnote numbers however, are generated automatically and often deviate from the note numbers in the print edition. To enable the reader to find the correct note, the print footnote numbers have been added between straight brackets after the online number.
For example footnote 771 is displayed like this:
