Article 31, paragraph 6, of the Statute lays down clearly that judges ad hoc shall fulfil the conditions for professional competence and independence required by Articles 2, 17, paragraph 2, 20, and 24 of the Statute. A judge ad hoc has to make the same solemn declaration as is required of a member of the Court before taking up his or her duties.1 This provides some assurance for the independence of the judge ad hoc.
