For several years before the institution of these proceedings in 1994, the relations between Cameroon and Nigeria had been strained over border issues relating to their 1,600 kilometres boundary extending from Lake Chad to the Gulf of Guinea (probably the longest single land frontier delimited in a single judgment or arbitral award, together with the consequent delimitation of the maritime zones of each State).
