A Wolof from Ndieye, a village located between the cities of Kebemer and Guéoul in northern Senegal, he was initiated to Qurʾānic studies by his father Muḥammad Lo. He then moved to Kébémer and stayed a year studying there. From Kébémer, he went to Ndiarde where he stayed ten years and received initiation into the Tijāniyya from Shaykh Malik Seye.
