The eldest son of Ibrāhīm Niyās, he succeeded to the leadership of the Niassene Tijāniyya on the latter’s death in 1975 after ʿAlī Cisse had stood down. Like all his brothers and sisters, he received most of his training in Senegal, at the hands of his father and a Mauritanian scholar, Sh. Rabbānī.
