Biography

Ruler of the Sudan in succession to the Mahdi; he was from the Taʿāīsha Baqqāra of Darfur. Both his father and grandfather were members of the Sammāniyya (see Nūr al-Dāʾim (1954), 327-28). He joined the Mahdi at Ābā Island and was appointed khalīfat al-Ṣiddīq by the Mahdi after his manifestation.
