Introduction
(72 words)

This chapter lists those writers who were active in the period 1821-1885, when the Sudanese Nile Valley was ruled as a colony of Egypt. This period is generally called in Sudanese writings the Turkiyya, usually translated as the Turco-Egyptian period, to emphasise the nature of the ruling institution. A number of the writers listed here served as officials of the Turco-Egyptian regime.
