He held a number of lesser administrative posts, including headship of the ribāṭ at Gandi. He was passed over as a candidate for the post of amīr al-muʾminīn in 1294/1877 in favour of his full brother and senior Muʿādh, and again in 1881 in favour of his nephew ʿUmar b. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad Bello. He was the author of much poetry and some prose in Hausa, Fulfulde and Arabic.
