Certain didactic and devotional texts have been studied in almost every age and place in Western Sudanic Africa. They have often been the inspiration for locally written works, and are the subject of commentaries and glosses, or, in the case of poems, rendering in quintains or other such treatments. Those most frequently referred to are listed below.
