Zaylaʿ and Jabart

A number of scholars with the nisbas, Zaylaʿī, Ḥabashī (or Ḥibshī) or Jabartī will be found in GAL. Most will be found to have come from the Yemen. On the origin and history of the terms used to designate Ethiopian Muslims, Jabart or Jabarta or Zayāliʿa, see E. Wagner (2000).

The most famous Jabartī was the Egyptian historian, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jabartī (b. 1167/1753, d. 1825 or 1826; see EI (2), i, 355-57) whose family were, for several generations, closely associated with the riwāq Jabartī at al-Azhar, a species of hostel for Ethiopian Muslims studying at al-Azhar and which e…
