Demetrias was born in Rome around 398 CE. She was a descendant of the gens Anicia, who were a prominent Roman family and early converts to Christianity. Her parents were Anicia Juliana and the consul Anicius Hermogenianus Olybrius Probus. Her paternal grandparents were Petronius Probus, a Roman senator and praetorian prefect, and Anicia Proba Faltonia.
