The Jewish Diaspora had a long history before the advent of Christianity. The expulsion from Judaea and the coerced sojourn in Babylonia began already in the 6th century BCE. Many Jews in that land chose to remain even after the release from the “Babylonian Captivity” and the possibility of return. A thriving Jewish military colony at Elephantine in Upper Egypt held forth in that same era. Jews were not homebodies.
