The council was gathered in November 439 CE in Riez (Provence), halfway between Arles and Embrun, by the metropolitan Hilary of Arles (d. 449 CE). Its prime aim was to discuss the uncanonical ordination of Armentarius and his replacement on the episcopal see of Embrun.
