Family BackgroundA native of Lyon in Gaul, Gaius Sollius Sidonius Apollinaris was born circa 432 CE. His father, whose name may have been Alcimus, served as praetorian prefect of Gaul in 448/449 CE, and his grandfather Apollinaris held the same office in 408 CE. Sidonius thus came from one of the most blue-blooded families of late Roman Gaul.
