Scholarly knowledge of synagogues in the 1st through 6th centuries CE is determined and limited by the literary, archaeological, and epigraphic evidence that originate from across the Roman Empire, span over 1,000 years, and yet fail to provide a complete picture of synagogues in any particular time or location.
