Rūpa Gosvāmī was one of the principal disciples of Kṛṣṇa Caitanya and an important 16th-century theologian of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava school; he developed an elaborate avatāra theology as well as a sophisticated theology of religious emotion.
