Attended school in Berlin (Wilhelms-Gymnasium), Abitur there 1877; studied at Heidelberg, Berlin, Greifswald; 1882 doctorate there with Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorf; 1888 habil. at Halle. 1892 prof. ext. at Rostock; 1893 prof. ord. there. 1900 and 1921 prof. ord. in Greek at Vienna; 1914 prof. ord. in Frankfurt a. M.; 1921–1930 prof. at Vienna.
