British archaeologist and topographer. Born 14. 10. 1874 at Staines (Middlesex), died 15. 5. 1931 in New Malden (Surrey). After attending public school (Winchester College) 1893–1897, studied at Christ Church College, Oxford. From 1903 Assistant Director, 1906–1925 Director of the British School at Rome (BSR); appointed Senior Research Fellow at Christ Church College, Oxford for 1931.
