Belgian classical philologist. Born Marie-Auguste-Joseph Born 9. 4. 1867 in Frameries, died 20. 09. 1945 in Oostakker near Ghent. Studied at the Univ. of Liège, 1888 doctorate in classical philology, 1891 doctorate of law there; 1894 ‘special doctorate’ in classical philology at Univ. of Ghent, lecturer there in Greek philology and history of Greek philosophy from 1895, prof. ext. from 1902, prof. ord. from 1907. De facto dismissal from teaching 1933 because of new language legislation for the Flemish univ.; retired 1937.
