German Egyptologist, archaeologist and art historian. Born 22. 4. 1873 in Potsdam, died 12. 1. 1956 in Agg near Oberaudorf am Inn. 1892–1896 studied at Bonn and Berlin; 1896 doctorate in Egyptology at Bonn, 1901 postdoctoral habil. in Munich. Prof. ext. there 1905, then 1906–1922 prof. ord. of Egyptology and Near Eastern antiquities; 1916–1918 at Ghent; 1922–1926 prof. ord. in Utrecht. Thereafter private scholar at Oberaudorf until his death.
