School at Aschaffenburg, studied (history, philosophy) there 1809–1812, 1812–1818 in Paris (Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit), 1818–1820 in London (Sanskrit); 1820 honorary doctorate Univ. Göttingen. 1821 prof. ext. of Oriental literature and general linguistics at Univ. of Berlin, 1822 member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, 1825–1864 prof. ord. at Univ. of Berlin.
