From 1919, studied Literae Humaniores at Oxford; from 1922 Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford; 1946–1951 prof. of poetry at Oxford. Guest professorships Harvard 1936/37 and 1948/49. Knighted 1951 (Sir Maurice Bowra). President of the British Academy 1958–1962.
