Studied especially theology from 1837 at Univ. of Basel, then philology at Berlin from 1839. 1843 doctorate at Basel in absentia. 1844 postdoctoral habil. 1845 prof. ext. Basel. 1855–1858 prof. of art history at Eidgenössisches Polytechnikum Zürich, 1858–1893 prof. of history and art history at Univ. of Basel.
