Petrus Burmannus (Senior). Dutch philologist and librarian. Born Utrecht 6. 7. 1668; died Leiden 31. 3. 1741. Uncle of Pieter Burmann the Younger. Studied classical languages at Utrecht, law at Leiden and Utrecht. 1688 doctorate of law (Univ. of Leiden). Prof. ext. of ancient history from 1696, prof. ord. from 1698, also prof. ord. of Greek and Latin from 1715, all Leiden.
