British classical philologist. Born London 27. 6. 1840, died there 18. 12. 1914. Attended private school in London; from 1858 studied at Queen’s College, Oxford. From 1863, fellow and tutor at Exeter College, Oxford; 1884 univ. reader in Greek; 1893–1908 Regius Prof. of Greek at Oxford.
