Italian archaeologist. Born Rome 29. 6. 1879, died Casteggio di Pavia 20. 9. 1944. 1901 doctorate ¶ in archaeologist and history of ancient art at Rome. Assistant there in 1904, lecturer 1909; 1909 inspector of the museum of the Villa Giulia (Rome). 1913 prof. of archaeology at Genoa. Volunteered for military service 1915. 1919 director of the Scuola Archeologica Italiana in Athens. Initiated and directed major excavations on Lemnos. Dismissed from public service 1938 because of the new race laws.
