German classical philologist. Born Heidelberg 31. 8. 1840, died Halle 29. 12. 1906. School at Weimar. From 1859 studies at Jena and Göttingen, 1863 doctorate and 1864 habil., Göttingen. 1865–1874 Gymnasium teacher at Berlin, Rudolstadt, Quedlinburg. From 1874 prof. at Halle.
