E. R. Dodds. Irish classical philologist. Born Banbridge, County Down (now Northern Ireland) 26. 6. 1893, died Old Marston (near Oxford) 8. 4. 1979. School at St. Andrew’s College, Dublin and Campbell College, Belfast; studied classics at Oxford 1912. 1917/18 teacher in Dublin; 1919 lecturer in classics at Reading. From 1924, prof. of Greek at Birmingham; 1936–1960 Regius Prof. of Greek at Oxford.
