German Egyptologist. Born Ludwigshafen 12. 3. 1914, died Bonn 25. 4. 1997. Gymnasium at Würzburg; 1933/34 studied Egyptology at Heidelberg, then Berlin from 1934; 1941 doctorate Berlin (while still a soldier); 1947 habil. in Heidelberg. Prof. ext. at Bonn from 1955; 1963–1982 prof. ord. of Egyptology there, succeeding Hans Bonnet. From 1959, excavations and epigraphic work at Qubbet el-Hawa (rock tomb necropoleis near Aswan). Member of numerous scholarly societies.
