German classical philologist, theologian and pedagogue. Born Tennstedt (Erfurt) 4. 8. 1707, died Leipzig 11. 9. 1781. Studied at Wittenberg from 1726, at Leipzig from 1728. From 1731 deputy rector, 1734–1759 rector of the Thomasschule at Leipzig. From 1742, prof. ext. litterarum humaniorum at the Univ. of Leipzig, 1756 theological doctorate; 1756–1770 prof. ord. in eloquence, from 1759 prof. ord. in theology at Univ. of Leipzig.
