German classical archaeologist and art historian. Born Mainz 14. 1. 1894, died Cologne 25. 1. 1983. Studied archaeology, history and history of art at Bonn with Franz Winter, Conrad Cichorius and Paul Clemen, 1922 doctorate there. 1923 assistant in the Roman Dept. of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne. 1935 director of the Roman and Germanic Depts. there. 1946 director of the Römisch-Germanisches Museum in Cologne.
