German archaeologist. Born Delmenhorst 7. 4. 1831, died Berlin 19. 10. 1871. Gymnasium in Bremen and Oldenburg; studies at Göttingen and Erlangen; doctorate 1853 at Erlangen; habil. there 1855. From 1858 assistant to the director of the Berliner Museen; from 1868 director of the Berlin Antiquarium. 1869/70 journeys to the Mediterranean, France and Britain.
