School at Freiburg; studied classical philology and archaeology there, also in Leipzig and Munich, doctorate Munich 1874. Habil. Bonn 1879. 1880 assistant at Skulpturensammlung, 1882–1894 Antiquarium, both Berlin. 1884 prof. ext. at Berlin; 1894 prof. ord. in classical archaeology at Munich; 1896 director of Antiquarium. Excavations at Olympia, Orchomenus and Aegina.
