American classical philologist. Born Charleston, South Carolina, 23. 10. 1831, died Baltimore 9. 1. 1924. 1853 doctorate at Göttingen. 1856–1876 prof. of Greek at the Univ. of Virginia in Charlottesville, 1861–1867 prof. of Latin there; 1876–1915 prof. of Greek at Johns Hopkins Univ., Baltimore.
