Gräve, Johann; German philologist. Born Naumburg 29. 1. 1632, died Utrecht 11. 1. 1703. After attending school at Pforta, studied law at Leipzig, then philology with Johann Friedrich Gronovius at Deventer and Alexander Morus and David Blondel at Amsterdam. 1656, prof. of eloquence at Duisburg. 1657 succeeded Gronovius at Deventer; prof. of eloquence there 1661, also of history and politics from 1667. Court historian to Stadholder Willem III of Orange. Refused many appointments, notably to Padua.
