Gronow, Jacob; Dutch historian, gemmologist and antiquarian. Son of the philologist Johann Friedrich Gronovius. Born Deventer 10. 10. 1645, died Leiden 21. 10. 1716. 1658 studied philology and law at Leiden, 1668 studies at Oxford and Cambridge. 1670 refused an appointment at Deventer. From 1672 prof. of Greek at the Univ. of Pisa; from 1679 prof. of Greek and history at the Univ. of Leiden. From 1702 geographer at the Academy in Leiden. Refused invitations to Kiel and Padua.
